10 Interesting things to do in Windermere, England

Windermere refers to both the town[1] situated in the Cumbria county of England and the lake[2] in the vicinity of that town. Its an ideal place to make a holiday trip and especially with family and kids! 


From boat trips along the lake shore to gardens, museums and historical places, Windermere town has a distinct charm which you'll certainly fall in love with.

1. Visit the Windermere lake[2]. The lake is the most obvious place of tourism interest and one of the reasons why the town gets so many visitors every year. There are various points such as the Brockhole which features boat hire, kayak tours and raft building among other attractions.

Then there is Wray Castle which is a mock Gothic castle on the lake shore and ideal to visit for a lazy stroll on a sunny or even rainy day.

2. Enjoy the country side thrills at Storrs Hamlet[3]. Storrs is a hamlet in the South Lakeland district of the Cumbria county and located about 2 miles to the south of Bowness-on-Windermere. Its a quiet and serene place to visit for those looking for tranquility.

3. Thrill your family and kids by taking them to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway[6]. This one is a picturesque railway station located near Newby Bridge and a must visit when you happen to visit Windermere. And when the train passes through the contrasting lake and river scenes of the Laven Valley, you may get a nostalgic feeling of Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter world!

4. Visit the St. Martin's Church[4]. Situated right in the central area of Bowness-on-Windermere, St. Martin's is an Anglican Parish church in the deanery of Windermere, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle[4].

Originally built in 1203, St. Martin's is also an architectural wonder with its exteriors and interiors getting rebuilt and crafted by the best and state-of-the-art artisans throughout history.

5. Make a trip to the neighboring town of Bowness-on-Windermere [5]. Its about 1.3 miles from the Windermere town and hardly a 4 minute drive.

Due to its position on the banks of Windermere, the town has become a tourist honeypot. Although their mutual growth has caused them to become one large settlement, the town is distinct from the town of Windermere as the two still have distinguishable town centres[5].

6. Embrace the natural surroundings by visiting Grizdale Forest Centre[7][12]. Grizdale Forest is a place of natural surroundings and serene beauty, and obviously a must-visit if you happen to have an appreciation for nature in the wild. You will find several hills, tarns and the settlements of Grizedale and Satterthwaite[12].

It is managed by the Forestry Commission and is a popular tourist destination with waymarked footpaths, mountain biking, an aerial assault course, a 16-bed hostel, and a visitor centre with a children's playground, education centre, café and shop[12].

7. Appreciate the marine life by making a trip to The Lakes Aquarium[8][13]. Located on the southern shore of Windermere lake, this aquarium is also a major docking point for Windermere Lake Cruises.

It opened in 1997 as The Aquarium of the Lakes when the displays followed the theme of a Lake District stream, flowing down into the lake and then on to Morecambe Bay. During 2008 it was re-branded as the Lakes Aquarium, with a theme of the lakes of the world. The attraction is now owned by Spanish leisure company Parques Reunidos, who own and operate 67 parks across the world[13].

8. Surprise the literary fan inside you by visiting The World of Beatrix Potter[9]. Its a themed park and a major visitor attraction right in the central area of Bowness-on-Windermere and named after the famed children's author Beatrix Potter.

Some of the interesting artifacts you'll find here are Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and all their friends in a magical indoor recreation of Beatrix Potter‘s little books, complete with the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside[9].

9. Reminisce the classic cars and motorbikes of the yesteryears by visiting Lakeland Motor Museum[10][14]. Located in Backbarrow, Cumbria, which is about 10 miles or 18 minutes drive from Windermere town, this museum houses a collection of classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedal cars and motoring related items and memorabilia and an exhibition dedicated to the land and water speed record activities of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald[14].

10. Appreciate artifacts from the stone and bronze ages by visiting The Ruskin Museum in Coinston[11][15]. Coinston is about 20 minutes drive from Windermere and this museum is a great place to get lost in the majestic beauty of its past years! It was established in 1901 by W. G. Collingwood, an artist and antiquarian who had worked as secretary to art critic John Ruskin. 

The museum is both a memorial to Ruskin and a local museum covering the history and heritage of Coniston Water and the Lake District[15].
