Exploring the mystery behind "Somaji Gomaji Kapse" and 1852 anecdotes in Maharashtra and North Karnataka

Those connected with the roots of Maharashtra and North Karnataka will be likely familiar with these two anecdotes often quoted in those regions. When someone feels proud or refuses to speak to you or show any consideration, they are typically compared to a dude named Somaji Gomaji Kapse. And 1852 is often used as metaphor for representing something that is extraordinarily old. For example, if you are still using an old Maruti 800 car, someone will tell you to get out of that 1852 mindset!

Now, who is this Gomaji Kapse (the first name "Somaji" is omitted sometimes)? The only online reference you'll find is to this Marathi song but our quest doesn't end there because this anecdote is much older than that. In fact, the song may have been inspired and written only because of this anecdote's popularity!

Coming back to our question, the nearest historical reference I could find belongs to Gomaji Naik Pansambal who was a warrior and military advisor in the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and also the founder of Maratha Empire in 17th century India

Its quite possible that the anecdote of Gomaji Kapse may have been derived from Gomaji Naik (and "Somaji" prefix may have been added later due to historical error).

As for 1852 (or आठराशे बावन्न as its often called in marathi), I couldn't find anything of much consequence (at least on the internet). In fact, 1857 was the more important year for us as the mutiny and revolt against the British govt. took place. However, if you look at the history of Mumbai, you'll find that the Bombay Association (which was the first political organization of the Bombay Presidency) was started on 26th August, 1852.
